Goalie looks to bounce back after upset loss

Casey DeSmith and the Penguins in general were a big disappointment Wednesday night in Chicago, but they are in a nice spot to bounce back against the Boston Bruins. Boston is averaging a healthy 31.7 shots on goal per game, but they have scored the fifth-fewest goals per game (2.71 GF/G). That number drops even more on the road where they are averaging an abysmal 1.88 goals per game. DeSmith's price is affordable on both DraftKings ($7,700) and FanDuel ($8,200) as he has posted a solid 2.43 GAA and .921 SV% in 21 appearances.

Keep Rolling with this Cheap Goalie

I recommended DeSmith the other night and he disappointed, but I'm going back to the well. Casey DeSmith hasn’t been great lately, but his overall numbers for the season aren't terrible (2.53 GAA with .923 SV%). Sidney Crosby might be back tonight, which is part of the reason Vegas has the Penguins as -170 favorites. At just $7000 on DraftKings, that makes DeSmith a viable option as he should pick up the win.

Cheap Goalie with High Win Probability

Casey DeSmith hasn't been great lately, but his overall numbers for the season are solid (2.25 GAA with .930 SV%). I'm not sure why the Penguins seem to dedicated to give Matt Murray a ton of starts because he's been terrible (4.08 GAA with .877 SV%), but luckily DeSmith gets the call tonight. The Sabres are riding a five game winning streak, but Vegas has still instilled the Penguins as -170 favorites. At just $6900 on DraftKings, that makes DeSmith the best value goalie of the slate by a wide margin.

Pittsburgh looks to DeSmith to get things going

Casey DeSmith gets the start tonight against an Arizona team that has been generating over 33 shots on goal per game. This ranks as the sixth best team in that category while their 2.86 goals per game average sinks all the way down to 24th in the league. This is a perfect storm here as Arizona can get the shots to the net but cannot put the biscuit in the basket. Yes Pittsburgh has had trouble scoring of late but this is one reason why DeSmith may be slightly under owned this evening. If you wanted to go with the dead chalk then Andrei Vasilevskiy would be your guy as Tampa is a -300 favorite on home ice against a struggling Ottawa team that has given up 67 goals so far this season.

Murray a wall on the road and on the bench

The Penguins have been inserted as a -200 favorite on the road in Vancouver this evening. This would make you think that Matt Murray should be a decent play and you’d be right. Yes the Canucks may get Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson back this evening and that can only help matters as that would mean more shots on the Pittsburgh net minder. While Murray is 4-1 with a 3.37 goals against average he has been a superb goaltender on the road. 3-0 with an 1.98 goals against average and a .957 save percentage should be more than enough to persuade you to pay up for him this evening. The Canucks have scored just eight goals in regulation in their last five games. *EDIT* Casey DeSmith has been announced as tonight's starter, which is fine as well against a Vancouver team that has found trouble putting the puck in the net.

DeSmith to get the Call Again

Casey DeSmith did a great job the other night as he turned aside 35 of the 37 shots that Vegas was able to get through to the net. Pittsburgh ended up winning that game by a final score of 4-2 which upped the team’s record to 2-1 this season. With the concussion Matt Murray the Pens turned to Smith who came through with flying colors. He did well last season in the 14 games he got into as he posted a 6-4 record with a .921 save percentage while posting a 2.40 goals against average. Montreal has scored only seven goal in the first three games but have averaged 35 shots on goal per game.

Top Goalie Tonight

Regardless of whether you are playing cash games or tournaments this evening, Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith should be at the top of your goalie list. The Penguins are by far the biggest favorite on the board tonight, and although the Montreal Canadiens struggle to score goals (sitting 29th overall in goals per game, and 31st overall in goals per game on the road), they continue to fire plenty of pucks on net (averaging 33.3 shots per game, god for eighth overall in the National Hockey League), putting De Smith in a prime spot tonight at the PPG Paints Arena. Look for the Penguins young netminder to not only come away with the win, but to also make at least 30 saves in the process.

Save some salary with this backup goaltender

There is no confirmation yet, but Casey DeSmith will likely get the start against New Jersey tonight after Matt Murray guarded the crease last night. Casey has performed admirably in his six appearances this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.08 goals against average and .927 save percentage. While the defense in front of him is subpar, Casey will be backed by an offense which has been unstoppable recently. The Penguins have scored 25 goals in their last five games as they are finally resembling the back to back Stanley Cup Champions. Casey has been a solid goalie throughout his minor league career, and while the New Jersey Devils have been a tough nut to crack this season, Casey should have a good chance of picking up a win despite the Penguins playing on consecutive nights.
