Happy Wednesday and welcome to May!

We start the new month with a busy day of baseball. I’ll take a quick peek at the early 8-game DK slate that starts at 1:10 PM ET, and then I’ll be back with a breakdown of the 7-game evening slate which begins at 6:35 PM ET on both sites. Be sure to note the earlier-than-usual start times today. We will also have two Crunch Time shows to keep you updated with any final thoughts on this busy day.

As we move into the second full month of the season, most starting pitchers have 5-6 starts under their belt, so the numbers I post for pitching will be 2024-only from this point forward, and I’ll reference the older stats as necessary.

Wednesday Early Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings

There is a lot of good pitching on this early slate, but there are also some pretty big gaps, and I don’t want to bury the lead under my usual wordiness. I’ll touch very briefly on some of the MME-viable arms who miss my primary cut, but I want to start by simply talking about the three guys that make up my primary pool.

TWO AND A HALF ACES WALK INTO A POOL

Zack Wheeler at Angels
Chris Sale at Mariners
Bailey Ober at White Sox

Wheeler and Sale and Then Whatever

Zack Wheeler at Angels – 31.1% K, 7.4% BB, 1.93 ERA, 2.85 SIERA
Chris Sale at Mariners – 26.8% K, 5.7% BB, 3.69 ERA, 3.12 SIERA

Zack Wheeler is probably the most consistent, trustable ace in the game at this point. Yeah, I probably just jinxed him, but between his elite skills and efficiency, along with steady workload, I see him as a ‘Don’t Overthink It’ against the Troutless Angels. He has gone over 100 pitches in 4 straight starts and has allowed a grand total of 2 hits and 0 runs in his last 2 starts. Even when BABIP or HR/FB go against him, he gets the innings to give you some floor. When things go his way, he has the ceiling to match anyone. He’s expensive…but worth it.

Chris Sale is not quite Wheeler, but the innings have been every bit as good, going 7 innings in his last 3 starts, and he is between 6-7 strikeouts in all 5 starts this season. He gets a good matchup for strikeouts, and if you can’t quite afford Wheeler, Sale is a great next option. In an ideal world, I’d play Wheeler and Sale in every lineup and be done with it.
